TfL Ref: FOI-2283-2122
Thank you for your request of 9th January 2022 asking for information about CS9.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.
Specifically you asked:
“Please provide hard evidence and data to support the claim that CS9 is “safer””.
I am sure you will have seen the response to Mayoral Question 2021/4985 which asked “Please disclose the data used to support your claim that C9 will be “safer” than the status quo”. A copy can be seen here:
To add to that response, recent research in the UK focusing on London found that protected cycle infrastructure reduces injury risk by between 40 and 60% (Adams, Thomas, and Rachel Aldred. 2020. “Cycling Injury Risk in London: Impacts of Road Characteristics and Infrastructure.” Findings, December - https://findingspress.org/article/18226-cycling-injury-risk-in-london-impacts-of-road-characteristics-and-infrastructure). Further evidence from leading cycling cities supports segregation to address cyclist safety (for example, Copenhagen has introduced mostly segregated cycle tracks over the last 25 years and over the same period the risk of serious collision has reduced by 72% per cycled kilometre. Similarly, in North America research highlights that separated and protected bike lanes lead to fewer fatalities and better road safety for all road users (University of Colorado Denver. "Cycling lanes reduce fatalities for all road users, study sho1ws: Roads are safer for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists in cities with robust bike facilities." ScienceDaily. www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/05/190529113036.htm) .
