FOI request detail

Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Utilisation Data

Request ID: FOI-2174-1819
Date published: 05 December 2018

You asked

I am interested in the data linked to the Electric Vehicle charging network currently in operation in London (https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/electric-vehicles-and-rapid-charging#on-this-page-8). Is there a database which collects information on Electric Vehicle charging instances across this network? Such a database would hold a record of each instances of charging, noting such issues as chargepoint utilised, time of connection, and electricity drawn. If such a database exists, would it be possible to know: • Its temporal coverage (i.e. how far back in time it goes) • Its spatial coverage (i.e. how many chargepoints are included) • Its attribute coverage (i.e. what data is collected for each charging instance)

We answered

Dear

TfL Ref: FOI-2174-1819

Thank you for your email received by Transport for London (TfL) on 19 November 2018.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm we do hold the information you require. You asked:

Is there a database which collects information on Electric Vehicle charging instances across this network? Such a database would hold a record of each instances of charging, noting such issues as chargepoint utilised, time of connection, and electricity drawn.

If such a database exists, would it be possible to know:

  • Its temporal coverage (i.e. how far back in time it goes)

Information on charging instances across the Rapid Charging Network stretches back to when the first  one was delivered and went live in October 2017.

  • Its spatial coverage (i.e. how many chargepoints are included)

As of the end of October 2018 TfL’s Rapid Charge Point network consists of 137 Rapid Charge Points.

  • Its attribute coverage (i.e. what data is collected for each charging instance)

    • Charge point ID
    • Socket type
    • Location
    • Date and time of start and finish
    • Duration
    • kWh used
    • Whether charge point is open access or taxi only

TfL does not receive personal information of individuals using the charge points, we only receive a user ID which is a number attributed to that individual using the charge point.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for some reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
