Request ID: FOI-2083-2223 Date published: 20 December 2022
You asked
Hello, Despite a previous request you are still generating automatic fines for exempt vehicles. What a waste of people's time! There are also many more Teslas on the road. Could you please provide the statistics of the total number of penalties issued to the TESLA vehicles between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2021.
We answered
TfL Ref: FOI-2083-2223
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 22nd November 2022 asking for information about ULEZ Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs).
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.
Specifically you asked:
“Could you please provide the statistics of the total number of penalties issued to the TESLA vehicles between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2021.”
I can confirm that we hold the information you require.
Historically the data we use to establish compliance with the ULEZ has not allowed us to automatically exempt electric vehicles from the ULEZ. However, in April 2021 we made changes to our system which means we are able to perform additional validation checks prior to a Penalty Charge Notice being issued.
Between 1 January and 31 March 2021 there were 53 ULEZ penalties issued to Tesla vehicles. No ULEZ penalties have been issued to Tesla vehicles since then.
If this is not the information you are looking for please do not hesitate to contact me.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
Yours sincerely,
David Wells FOI Case Officer FOI Case Management Team General Counsel Transport for London
