We answered
TfL Ref: 2044-2223
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 18 November 2022 asking for information about cycle counts on Chiswick High Road, in relation to a previous request, TfL Reference: 1589-2223.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You asked for the following:
Regarding data provided in FOI-1589-2223, can you confirm if it is valid to add cycle counts from the following count lines to get a figure for the total cycle counts at this location on Chiswick High Rd?
sensor 62 countline 22097 (Chiswick High Rd eastbound carriageway) sensor 63 countline 22081 (Cycleway 9 both directions) sensor 63 countline 22082 (Chiswick High Rd westbound carriageway)
We can advise that the correct count-lines to use at Chiswick High Road are as follows: sensor 62 count-line 22097 (Chiswick High Road eastbound carriageway) sensor 63 count-line 22082 (Chiswick High Road westbound carriageway)
There is also sensor 62 count-line 22096 (Chiswick High Rd Cycle Lane both directions – East=IN), as shown in the diagram below:
Additionally, please use count-line 22096 instead of 22081, as they record very similar sections of Cycle Superhighway 9. This is because our validation of the technology shows that count-line 22096 produced more accurate counts results in our tests.
Please also be aware that although these count-lines are in close proximity to each other, the westbound carriageway count-line is the opposite side of the junction of Turnham Green Terrace to the other two count-lines so there will be some cyclists turning off, therefore the number will be lower than if the location of the sensor was the other side of the junction.
Please discount using sensor 63 count-line 22081; Cycleway 9 both directions.
Furthermore, these results will only give cycle counts relevant for that location and not for Cycle Superhighway 9 as a whole. We are mentioning this because In previous Freedom of Information requests related to Cycle Superhighway 9, information has been accurately provided on how to estimate total cycle demand in total cycle kms, when considering routes, corridors, or cycle super highways, such as that of Cycle Superhighway 9.
