Dimensions of vertical grab rails on tubes

I would like to know the dimensions if possible of the vertical grab poles/rails on tubes (specifically the diameter) and if the dimensions are any different that is found on buses. Any technical drawings are appreciated too.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You asked;

I would like to know the dimensions if possible of the vertical grab poles/rails on tubes (specifically the diameter) and if the dimensions are any different  that is found on buses. Any technical drawings are appreciated too.

Please find the grab pole diameters below;

  • 72TS (Bakerloo Line) – All vertical grab poles have a diameter of 34.92mm.
  • 73TS (Piccadilly Line) –  All vertical grab poles have a diameter of 35mm.
  • 92TS (Central Line and Waterloo and City Line) – Vertical grab poles attached to the seats and at the ends of the cars have a diameter of 35mm. Vertical grab poles in the walkway between seats have a diameter of 38.1mm.
  • 95TS (Northern Line) – All vertical grab poles have a diameter of 35mm.
  • 96TS (Jubilee Line) – All vertical grab poles have a diameter of 35mm.
  • 09TS (Victoria Line) – All vertical grab poles have a diameter between 35mm – 35.35mm.
  • S-Stock (Circle, District, Hammersmith and City, and Metropolitan Line) – All vertical grab poles have a diameter varying between 34.8mm – 35.6mm.

The new bus specification for grab poles / hand rails diameters are as below. These are defined by the UK bus accessibility and bus build regulations.

4.5.3 Handrail/stanchion construction and installation

All handrails and stanchions shall be constructed such that they form a smooth tube of between 30mm and 35mm in diameter and finished in powder coating or nylon dipped (both with a matt crackle finish). Handrails and Stanchions should be coloured, yellow (RAL 1028), green (RAL 6018) or orange (RAL 2028). Any alternative colours will require the prior approval of the Nominated Officer.
