TfL Ref: 1904-1718

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 15 October 2017 asking for information about how many people work at Kings Cross Station at night.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold the information you require.

On Monday night 16 October 2017, which is considered a typical night, we had 117 LU staff and contractors booked on for work from 2300 hrs onwards. All contractors aim to finish by 0430 hrs, 30 minutes before the opening of the station to public service.  This allows the station supervisor to inspect the areas where the contractors have been working to ensure it is left in a safe and clean state.

Upon arrival, contracting firms liaise with the Site Person in Charge (SPC). This will always be one individual, unless they have a large team working under them, then there may be several.

Each SPC will have a team that they are responsible for. This team could range from being responsible for one to 15 individuals dependant on the category of work being carried out.

At Kings Cross, there are 20 to 28 groups of workers on an average night. The only exception is Friday and Saturday nights, as  - due to the Night Tube service  -  contractors will only undertake minor works where necessary. Jobs range from escalator and track side maintenance to track side litter picking and putting up posters, as well as the various jobs raised by the station on faults found during service.

At this station we have a resident fire control panel engineer who maintains the fire detection system for this station. The working hours are 2300 to 0430 hrs.

The night cleaning team sign in at 2300 and finish at 0700 hrs. We have a team of ten cleaners responsible for the cleaning of the whole station.
