Request ID: FOI-1852-2021
Date published: 04 January 2021

You asked

Dear Transport for London, can you please tell me the following: What's the total number of your staff who have furloughed at any point since the schemes inception: What's the total number of staff you currently have furloughed? What's the total number of staff on furlough since the scheme started? Are the numbers quoted across the whole of TFL including the franchises? Do you have any staff on furlough who are not "Front Line Staff?" Are the staff on furlough generally those specified as being the most vulnerable?

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-1852-2021

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 15 December 2020, asking for information about furloughed staff.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You asked:

What's the total number of your staff who have furloughed at any point since the schemes inception?

7502

What's the total number of staff you currently have furloughed?

TfL does not currently have any staff on furlough. TfL’s participation in the Government Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme ended on 2 December 2020.

What's the total number of staff on furlough since the scheme started?

Please see above.

Are the numbers quoted across the whole of TFL including the franchises?

This number represents permanent staff employed directly by TfL and does not include those employed by our contracted services or third party operators.

Do you have any staff on furlough who are not "Front Line Staff?"

TfL does not currently have any staff on furlough.

Are the staff on furlough generally those specified as being the most vulnerable?

In addition to furloughing roles whose work was reduced, paused or stopped due to the pandemic, we also furloughed staff who needed to shield or those who were on long-term sick leave. There were therefore some instances where individuals were furloughed as they were unable to work.

TfL did not furloughed any safety critical roles, critical operational roles or those running TfL services that provide public transport for customers who need to travel during the pandemic. TfL also did not furlough any roles that are necessary to support London’s recovery from the pandemic and to enable customers to travel safely and sustainably.

If you are considering submitting a further request please think carefully about whether the request is essential at this current time, as answering FOI/EIR requests will require the use of limited resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. Where requests are made, please note that our response time may be impacted by the current situation.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
