FOI request detail

Bus Lanes

Request ID: FOI-1824-1920
Date published: 09 October 2019

You asked

I would like to find out how many bus lanes there are in London please, ideally by type i.e. with-flow and contra-flow. And if you have any other data on numbers of other bus priority measures such as bus-only streets and bus-actuated traffic signals that would also be helpful but is not essential. I do not need to know locations.

We answered

TfL Ref: 1824-1920

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 12 September 2019 asking for information about Bus Lanes.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require.

At the last count, we have 1,151 bus lanes in London and 1,035 of those are defined as being with flow; 26 are defined as being contraflow bus lanes.

We also have a number of bus actuated traffic signals (sites which receive messages from approaching buses to enable the appropriate strategy to be implemented) on our road network and the breakdown is as follows:

  • Sites with bus gates: 7

  • Sites with iBus: 1930

  • Tramlink Sites: 22

You can access further information on our red routes and bus lanes using the following link:  https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/red-routes/rules-of-red-routes/bus-lanes

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
