FOI request detail

Euston Road Pedestrian Phasing

Request ID: FOI-1822-1920
Date published: 26 February 2020

You asked

The junctions of Euston Road and Churchway/Duke’s Place has no pedestrian light phasing and pedestrians are forced to risk their safety when crossing. There are no natural gaps in the traffic light phasing that would support safe pedestrian crossing. Please share relevant documentation including consultations and risk assessments relating to pedestrian crossing of this and surrounding areas of the Euston Road. I would also be grateful if TfL could confirm their current stance in writing of why pedestrian light phasing hasn’t been supported or built to date.

An engagement letter (see attached) was sent to residents and businesses on 15 April 2019 notifying them of our proposals to improve the junction of Euston Road with Churchway/Dukes Road. These proposals included plans to install pedestrian crossings on Dukes Road and Churchway, introduce new advance stop lines for cyclists and ban the left hand turn from Euston Road into Churchway.

Following feedback, the design was updated, with the main changes being the relocation of the cycle stands from the westbound to the eastbound footway, introduction of a cycle feeder lane on Churchway, introduction of a two stage right turn for cyclists on Euston Road, and the proposed build out on Churchway being removed to allow the Fire Service to turn left in emergencies from Euston Road. Please see the attached design drawing.

Subject to approvals, we propose to commence the delivery of these improvements by December 2019. We expect all works to be completed by Spring 2020.
