High pitched beeps on buses

Request ID: FOI-1769-1718
Date published: 16 October 2017

You asked

I would be interested to know how many people have complained about the high-pitched, sometimes grating beep on some bus routes (apparently to warn blind people that the doors are about to close). I am thinking of some buses on the 468 bus route, although some other routes are subject to the same disturbing, irritating noise. It doesn't have to be like this; many other routs use a much more discreet sound, notably the "Boris" buses.

Our Ref:         FOI-1769-1718

Thank you for your request received on 30 September 2017 asking for information about the number of complaints made about the beeping noise on the bus.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you require.

In February of this year a new system was introduced to record complaints received via Customer Service. We have carried out a search over all routes for queries we’ve received regarding the beep sound from the doors on the buses, there were 29 such queries. Of these only one was a complaint about the noise.

If this is not the information you are looking for please feel free to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
