FOI request detail

Bus fuel types

Request ID: FOI-1662-2223
Date published: 17 October 2022

You asked

I am doing some research on the use of fossil fuels and where we are currently with electrifying public transport. Could I please be put in touch with someone that can advise me on the following? - What % of buses are 100% electric? - What % are hybrid? - What % are still petrol or diesel combustion? - Who owns bus stations? Basically, who would normally pay the electric bill at a bus station? - Do bus stations allow charging of electric buses in the station? If not, where do you charge them? What I'm interested to know is what your plan is to remove petrol / diesel powered buses from your fleet and the potential cost and timescales. Also are there any further infrastructure requirements to enable this? For example, charging points at stations, at bus stops, service stations etc

We answered

TfL Ref: 1662-2223

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 30 September 2022 asking for information about the fuel types of buses and future plans for the fleet.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Information Regulations and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. You asked:

What % of buses are 100% electric? - What % are hybrid? - What % are still petrol or diesel combustion?

Please see the latest TfL Bus Fleet audit, which we publish and update via the following link to our website: https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/bus-fleet-data-and-audits

Who owns bus stations? Basically, who would normally pay the electric bill at a bus station? - Do bus stations allow charging of electric buses in the station? If not, where do you charge them?

We can advise that the charging of electric buses is the responsibility of the Bus Operating Companies, who operate TfL bus routes on our behalf. All electric buses charge at the respective Bus Operating Companies’ Bus Garage sites across London. A list of these operators can be found here:  https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/buses/who-runs-your-bus?intcmp=44680

What I'm interested to know is what your plan is to remove petrol / diesel powered buses from your fleet and the potential cost and timescales.

As Mayor of London and also Chair of TfL, the Mayor has detailed his plans in this area in the press release below issued by the Greater London Authority:

https://www.london.gov.uk/press-releases/mayoral/mayor-host-zero-emission-bus-summit-at-city-hall

Also are there any further infrastructure requirements to enable this? For example, charging points at stations, at bus stops, service stations etc

All zero-emission buses in the TfL bus fleet are also currently powered at the Bus Operating Companies’ Bus Garage sites across London. If you would like to contact the bus operators directly for any further information in this area, their contact details are provided at: https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/buses/who-runs-your-bus?intcmp=44680

However, please note that as private companies these operators are not legally obliged to respond to Freedom of Information or Environmental Information Regulations requests.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
