Freedom of Information request - TfL Station Design Idioms

Request ID: FOI-1591-1920
Date published: 27 September 2019

You asked

Dear Transport for London, Please could you supply a copy of the Design Idiom guidelines and standards booklet for London Overground, and if they exist, for the DLR or London Trams? If this is already online, or can be placed online, then just sending me a link to it would be ideal. Otherwise, please e-mail as a PDF attachment.

We answered

TfL Ref: 1591-1920

Thank you for your clarification of your request received by us on 9 September 2019 asking for information about the 'Station Design Idiom' document for London Overground, London Trams and the DLR.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold the information you require.

London Overground

Core London Overground stations are TfL infrastructure, and the station design idiom is under the TfL section in the following link: https://tfl.gov.uk/info-for/suppliers-and-contractors/design-standards. The core stations are as follows:

The core stations are on the ELL from Dalston Junction to Surrey Quays. They are:

Dalston Junc

Haggerston

Hoxton

Shoreditch High Street

Whitechapel

Shadwell

Wapping

Rotherhithe

Canada Water

Surrey Quays.

The remainder of stations are all Network Rail infrastructure and the design standards can be found in the following link. https://cdn.networkrail.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/S1-Station-design-principles.pdf.

In accordance with section 21 of the FOI Act, we are not obliged to supply you with a copy of the requested information as it is already accessible to you elsewhere.

London Trams

Trams do not have stations but have stops similar to bus stops. The stops were installed in the late 1990’s and we no longer have any design idiom available. Section 5 of the document in the link below would cover new tram stops (note none are planned at present), which outline the principles of consideration when designing a tramway but not the aesthetics (which would be governed by the TfL design standards).

DLR

Please see attached our DLR design guide .Please note that the document is a general conceptualization rather than a design guide that was created for us in 2009.
