Dear Sir/Madam, I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to you under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 to request some specific data relating to e-scooters and e-bikes in London. I am undertaking a research project that investigates e-scooters versus e-bikes choice models in the city of London, to better understand mobility patterns, usage trends, and overall impact on the transport ecosystem. For this purpose, I kindly request data for the e-scooter and e-bike trips in London from June 2023 up to the present date. The specific data fields I am interested in including: 1. Duration of each trip 2. Distance covered in each trip 3. Average speed during each trip 4. Origin latitude (rounded to 3 decimal places) 5. Origin longitude (rounded to 3 decimal places) 6. Destination latitude (rounded to 3 decimal places) 7. Destination longitude (rounded to 3 decimal places) 8. Mode: e-scooter or e-bike 9. Origin label 10. Destination label It is my belief that the requested information does not fall under any exemptions provided in the Act and that it would greatly contribute to the research I am currently undertaking, as well as broader public understanding of the e-scooter landscape in London. Please provide the data in a machine-readable format, preferably a CSV file and a XLSX file, to facilitate further analysis. I look forward to receiving your response. *Please note all e-bike information requested relates to Santander Cycles. 

 

Data on Santander Cycles trips is available through our Open Data sources here: https://cycling.data.tfl.gov.uk/.

This data includes:

  • Number (trip ID)
  • Start date
  • Start station number
  • Start station

  • Bike number
  • Bike model
  • Total duration
  • Total duration (ms)

Unfortunately, this data is unavailable as our GPS software is not linked to hire data. Previous research into cycling has suggested that the average cycling speed in London is around 14.9 km/h. We use this as a proxy for distance / speed.
