How was the decision made to remove Ladies only toilet at Ealing Broadway?

Request ID: FOI-1528-1920
Date published: 27 August 2019

You asked

I have seen from a poster that the Ladies toilets at Ealing Broadway station have been closed. There will no longer be a single-sex toilet provision for Ladies at this station. I would like to know 1. Which committee made this decision or if it was an individual, what grade are they? 2. What consultation was carried out with women users of the service? 3. What risk assessment was carried out into the impact on the safety of women and girls using this facility? 4. Was legal advice taken specifically on the issue of sex (biological sex) as a protected characteristic under equality legislation and the discrimination exemption under the Equality Act which allows discrimination in favour of women in the provision of toilets and changing rooms

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 21 August 2019 asking for information about the toilet at Ealing Broadway station.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require.

How was the decision made to remove Ladies only toilet at Ealing Broadway?  No decision has been made to remove the female only toilet at Ealing Broadway. Network Rail are undertaking work to improve and modernise the station including the provision of lifts to the platforms and the construction of new toilets comprising separate female and male facilities with provision for disabled customers within these facilities. However the construction work will cause some disruption to the station as areas are redeveloped. This includes disruption to the existing toilets and waiting room on platform 4. TfL Rail is working hard with Network Rail to maintain toilet facilities at the station whilst the redevelopment work progresses. The next phase of construction will see the existing female toilets reconfigured to provide two separate facilities for female and male, allowing the current male toilets to be taken out of use for the works.

I have seen from a poster that the Ladies toilets at Ealing Broadway station have been closed. There will no longer be a single-sex toilet provision for Ladies at this station.
