Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 5 September 2022, asking for information about TfL’s budget for rail and road bridges.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. Specifically you asked for:

  • Rail bridge maintenance budget for the next five years (broken down by year)
  • Money allocated for rail bridge design and construction for the next five years (broken down by year)
Northwick Park bridge is awaiting survey for design & build. We don’t hold any budget information at present.

Potential projects on rail bridges include;
  • Highbury Vehicle inclusion bridge refurbishment is currently on pause and we don’t hold any budget information at present.
  • North Action footbridge replacement/refurbishment works is on pause. No spend is forecast yet. Estimated financial cost is estimated between £3m to 7m.
  • Fulham Railway underbridge refurbishment is on pause. Estimated financial cost is estimated between £5m to 25m.

  • Road bridge maintenance budget for the next five years (broken down by year)
TfL does not have specific funding for ‘road bridges’ but our general maintenance budget is as shown below. Structures budgets encompass all structure types under TfL’s ownership and maintenance is targeted taking a risk based approach.  In any given year the money spent on bridges will vary depending on operational priorities.
