We answered

Thank you for your email received by us on 17 August 2017 asking for information about Transport for London’s (TfL) fixed speed cameras.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You asked:

1.How many fixed speed cameras do you have in your area?

Safety cameras have proved successful in reducing road casualties in recent years. At locations where safety cameras operate in the capital, research shows that the number of people killed or seriously injured (KSI) has fallen.
We have various types of safety cameras in operation: 70 - Average Speed Cameras improve speed compliance between cameras along extensive lengths of road; 222 - ‘Red light running’ cameras monitor and enforce against vehicles breaking the speed limit while going through green traffic lights, helping to further improve safety at junctions; and 513 - ‘Spot speed’ digital cameras monitor speed in both directions when located on the central reservation.

All our safety cameras have recently been upgraded from wet film to digital, making the capital's safety cameras more sustainable in the longer term. These upgrades are part of our continuing work to improve road safety for all road users, as explained at: www.tfl.gov.uk/roadsafety.
2. How many of those speed cameras are active at this precise moment in time

Our cameras operate on a digital enforcement basis and are therefore active.

If this is not the information you are looking for, for if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
