Thank you for your request received on 5 July 2023 asking for information about passengers who has had accidents, when trying to get in and out of trains on the Northern line.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.

Between 5 December 2016 and 27 July 2023 there have been a total of 323 safety incidents reported when a member of the public was boarding or alighting a train at a Northern Line station. Of those, six occurred at Hampstead station. (We do not hold information prior to December 2016).

Of the 323 incidents at Northern Line stations, it was reported that the gap between the train and the platform was a factor in 58 incidents. The remaining 265 were reported as not having involved the gap between the train and platform (for example a slip or trip).

Of the 323 incidents at Northern Line stations:
  • Our customers suffered no injury in 129 incidents
  • Our customers reported that they had sustained a minor injury in 189 incidents (this would include cuts, scrapes, sprains)
  • Our customers reported that they had sustained a serious injury in 5 incidents (this would include a customer being knocked unconscious or an injury such as a fracture or broken bone)

Of the six incidents at Hampstead station:
  • The gap between the train and platform was not reported as a root cause in any of the 6 incidents
  • No injury was sustained in one incident
  • Our customers reported that they had sustained a minor injury in five incidents

If this is not the information you are looking for, please do not hesitate to contact me.
