FOI - "every Journey matters"

Request ID: FOI-1117-1819
Date published: 12 December 2018

You asked

I would like to make a freedom of information request relating to the annual expenditure of the "every Journey matters" advertising campaigns on radio, tv, billboards, the printed press, in fact every medium tfl and the mayor use to waste the voters money. The total cost should include cost associated with advertising companies charges and the same for PR firms, ad makers/producers in fact all costs relating to this advertising campaign using any third party contributors. Unfortunately I listen to commercial radio while driving in London and every other ad seems to be from tfl so it occurs to me you must spend an extortionate amount of tax payers money on all this so I want to know just how much for all ads with the tag line ".To the ..???...every journey matters". If you don't have this years figure yet (2017 -2018) last years figure will do and you can let me have this years when it is available although I imagine you work on a financial year basis April - March so this year's should be available. I bet the total will pay for quite a few extra police or build quite a bit of social housing etc

Thank you for your request, sent to the GLA and subsequently received by Transport for London (TfL) on 20 July 2018 asking for information about the "Every Journey Matter" advertising yearly expenditure.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold the information you require.

There is no specific ‘Every Journey Matters’ campaign so there are no separate media or production costs for this. The term, ‘Every journey matters’, is the summary of our overall commitment to customer service and is therefore featured on all our customer information and campaigns.

We run campaigns to support a wide range of transport services and related activities, including essential safety, security and ticketing messages. These include

  • Promoting Road safety and safer travel at night

  • The promotion of improvements to transport and messaging to encourage Londoners to use public transport

  • Information for those with accessibility needs

  • Campaigns helping customers get the best fare

  • Encouraging safer travel and courtesy on the transport network

  • Giving customer information for major events which could disrupt London’s roads and public transport.
  • Helping drivers prepare for the Emissions Surcharge (T-Charge) and the forthcoming Ultra Low Emission Zone

  • Encouraging Londoners to walk and cycle

This is all done under the banner of ‘Every journey matters’.

Please find attached a breakdown of the costs for all our customer information and advertising campaigns for the last two full years up to June 2018.

The information has also been broken down by media channel as requested. The production costs for July 2016-June 2017 were £3,784,964.11 and for July 2017-June 2018 are £3,516,591.52. These costs include all the costs to produce press and poster artworks, record radio scripts, develop advertising for display on third party websites, promotion via social media and videos. We do not employ a PR agency.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for some reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
