We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-1059-2324

Thank you for your request of 5th July 2023 asking for information about probation outcomes for staff that started in January 2023.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

I would like to know the race and gender of those that started with me in January 2023, and the outcome of their probation whether it was passed, extended or terminated.”

I can confirm that we hold the information you require, which is provided in the tables below. Note that the information has been split to show the data by (a) ethnicity and (b) gender, as to provide the information in a single table showing ethnicity and gender together would allow some people to be identified unfairly, in contravention of data protection law, which is also enshrined within the section 40(2) exemption of the Freedom of Information Act (whereby information that would allow somebody to be identified, and where that identification is deemed unfair, is exempt from release).

Note that not every member of staff that started in January 2023 will have completed their probation yet (the standard probation period being 6 months). Note also that our central HR reporting system does not record whether the probation was “passed” or not, but there are fields available for probation length, and so the tables below show data for whether the probation period was extended or not. Where the “Probation extended” row is “no”, this means the person either successfully passed their probation (which is the vast majority), has yet to reach the end of their probation period, or left TfL, either because they resigned or because their probation was unsuccessful and was not extended. Of those that left TfL, 5 staff resigned and 1 had an unsatisfactory probation that was not extended.
