London Underground has long been an important patron of art and design and has an incredible track record in commissioning high-calibre contemporary public artworks that can be enjoyed by the millions of customers that use the Tube every day. Art on the Underground launched in 2000 to promote greater understanding of the Tube as a cultural and social environment, and its mission is to work with talented artists - with an established reputation or at the beginning of promising careers - to create extraordinary projects across Transport for London. It is enriching customers’ journeys by engaging with them, re-imagining spaces, and changing the way they experience the city. Building on a large and varied portfolio, Art on the Underground is at the forefront of contemporary debate about how art can shape public space.
