TfL Ref: FOI-0807-2324

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 14th June 2023 asking for information about lane rental finances.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

Please confirm how much money TfL has accumulated from the lane rental scheme since its inception, and how much it holds in reserves at the moment.

What specific projects have been allocated funding from the lane rental scheme funding?”

I can confirm that we hold the information you require.

TfL’s Lane Rental Scheme charges companies that undertake works on the busiest parts of the TfL road network, at times when demand from people making journeys is at its highest. Surplus income generated from the scheme is then reinvested back into the industry through congestion busting initiatives, which aim to improve current practices and accessed through different routes.

Total revenue since inception as at end of 21/22 is £72.6m. Our reserve balance is £25.2m  - see page 115 of the following link: Annual Report and Statement of Accounts 2021/22 (tfl.gov.uk) You may also be interested in the information on page 44 about reducing roadwork disruption through the Lane Rental Scheme, and page 135 which references our accounting policy on the utilization of reserves for the Lane Rental Scheme.

A catalogue of funded projects can be found on TfL’s Lane Rental scheme webpage - see here: TfL Lane Rental Scheme Innovation Catalogue 202305.
