We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-0756-1920

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 13th June 2019 asking for information about station exits on the London Underground and DLR.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

You asked:

May I have the information on all the exits of each station in both underground and DLR? Specifically, can I please have the exit name, latitude, longitude, opening hours, and time from the platform to that exit?”

I can confirm that we hold the information you require. However, to provide it would exceed the ‘appropriate limit’ of £450 set by the Freedom of Information (Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004.

Under section 12 of the FOI Act, we are not obliged to comply with a request if we estimate that the cost of determining whether we hold the information, and then locating, retrieving or extracting it from other information, would exceed the appropriate limit. This is calculated at £25 per hour for every hour spent on the activities described – equivalent to 18 hours work.

This is largely (but not exclusively) on account of your questions asking for the latitude and longitude of each station exit on the DLR, and for the time it would take to reach platforms from each exit on both the London Underground and the DLR. This information has not previously been compiled, and while we hold the raw information to produce answers we do not believe this would be achievable within the 18 hour threshold. There are over 300 stations on the London Underground and DLR combined (and, consequently, an even greater number of station exits as often stations have multiple exits). While it is difficult to attribute an estimated cost for providing the information you have requested we believe that it would be well in excess of the £450 limit. However, that said, I can provide you with some information that already readily exists in relation to your request which I hope will be of assistance.

The attached spreadsheet “Station co-ordinates” provides a list of London Underground stations and exits, along with Easting and Northing co-ordinates. This information was compiled some time ago, and while it is the most comprehensive list we hold there may be some additions or changes which are not shown on the spreadsheet.

The spreadsheet “DLR station entrances and exits” lists DLR stations and the number of exits/entrances at each (note that Bank, Canning Town, West Ham and Stratford are joint LU/DLR stations but managed by London Underground – the information for those stations is included in the first spreadsheet relating to the Underground).

The opening hours of stations can be found on our website – stations are open when services are running, and the times of first and last services can be found here (albeit, it is possible that not all exits will be open at all times):

The timetable for the DLR can be found here:

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely,
