Follow on from FOI-0462-1920 That FOI said 14 new trains would be ordered + 43 new DLR trains Announcement today 12th June confirmed order for 43 trains but no mention of 14 trains, see article below "CAF has been awarded the contract to design, manufacture and supply a fleet of 43 trains for the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) by Transport for London (TfL). The contract will include a Fleet Support Agreement to provide technical support services and spares supply. The state-of-the-art 5-car trains will be based on CAF’s hugely successful Metro vehicle design, with the first entering passenger service from 2023." Questions 1. When will these be 14 be ordered? 2. Why not ordered at the same time? 3. What is the delivery schedule for the original 43 trains + 14 i..e. when will delivery be complete? 4. Will new trains replace old trains first or increase number of trains per hour first, I am trying to see what year Isle of Dogs -Lewisham to Canary Wharf route first gets expanded with extra trains (I note new trains are larger)

Announcement today 12th June confirmed order for 43 trains but no mention of 14 trains, see article below;

CAF has been awarded the contract to design, manufacture and supply a fleet of 43 trains for the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) by Transport for London (TfL). The contract will include a Fleet Support Agreement to provide technical support services and spares supply.

The state-of-the-art 5-car trains will be based on CAF’s hugely successful Metro vehicle design, with the first entering passenger service from 2023.

1. When will these be 14 be ordered?

2. Why not ordered at the same time?

3. What is the delivery schedule for the original 43 trains + 14 i.e. when will delivery be complete?

4. Will new trains replace old trains first or increase number of trains per hour first, I am trying to see what year Isle of Dogs -Lewisham to Canary Wharf route first gets expanded with extra trains (I note new trains are larger)

The initial order of new DLR trains from CAF is for 43. We have the opportunity to order an additional 14 trains, funded by the Government’s Housing Infrastructure Fund, as announced in the autumn 2018 budget.  We are in the process of finalising the agreements with Government for these additional trains, which is why they weren’t referenced in the announcement on 12 June. We intend that the additional 14 trains will be part of the same production line.

We expect the first train to be delivered in 2022 for testing, and to come into passenger service in 2023. With a total of 57 trains, we would expect the final train to come into service in 2026.

Services are expected to start being enhanced between Lewisham and Canary Wharf as soon as the first new trains are in service, expected in 2023,  and current plans will see an increase in capacity of 65 per cent on this branch once all the new fleet are in use. Capacity enhancement will be through a mix of (a) the new trains having more space than an equivalent older 3-car train; (b) being able to replace 2-car trains with full length ones; and (c) having a larger fleet to increase frequency.
