FOI request detail

Cycle Future Route 2

Request ID: FOI-0750-2122
Date published: 27 July 2021

You asked

Can I request an update on this cycle route, also known as Cycle Future Route 2, first announced in early 2019. Any indication of a future consultation date has been removed from the TfL website at https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/cycling/routes-and-maps/cycleways , so any confirmation of the project status, i.e. if it is still being taken forward and its funding status, and confirmation of a rough date for a future consultation would be appreciated. I would like the most up to date detailed designs of the cycle route that exist, either of the kind that would form part of a public consultation or more detailed technical drawings. Ideally this would be for the whole route. I look forward to hearing from you within the statutory deadline.

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 10th July 2021 asking for information about the Camden to Tottenham Hale cycle route.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

I can confirm that we hold the information you require.

Cycleway 50 (formerly CFR2) was originally proposed as a permanent route running for 7km between Tottenham Hale and Camden. Design work on the permanent scheme had reached a relatively advanced stage when work was paused in March 2020 due to the pandemic. Due to high existing and potential cycle flows, the western half of this route between Royal College Street and  Finsbury Park (Fonthill Road) was prioritised for delivery as a temporary scheme under the London Streetspace programme.

Designs for the section of the route in Camden between Royal College Street and York Way are complete and this section of the route will be delivered by LB Camden as part of their Camden Square Area Low Traffic Neighbourhood proposals, which they consulted on in January / February 2021.

Designs for the section of the route between York Way and Finsbury Park (Fonthill Road) on LB Islington and TfL roads have been prepared. TfL has been keen to press ahead with delivery of this scheme since early this year. We await formal agreement from LB Islington that they are content for us to go ahead with the proposals. Subject to agreement from LB Islington, which we hope will be given before the end of the summer, and subject to the continued availability of funding, we hope to be able to begin the detailed design of the scheme in late summer which should enable us to begin construction in early 2022.

If it goes ahead this scheme will be introduced using temporary, low-cost materials under an experimental traffic order (ETO) with public engagement before and during the construction period. The conditions of the ETO include a requirement for continuous monitoring of the impacts of the scheme, and we will hold a public consultation to get feedback on the changes once the route has been constructed.

I attach the current designs for the scheme - please note these are at Concept Design stage only and subject to change as the design process continues as outlined above.

Work on the eastern half of the route between Finsbury Park and Tottenham Hale remains on hold at present.
