Cost of floor to ceiling platform screens on a single platform

Request ID: FOI-0678-2223
Date published: 27 June 2022

You asked

Good Evening; I am writing to you today regarding the Floor-to-Ceiling platform screens that were fitted along the Elizabeth Line. With that being said, I am not sure if you’d be able to disclose or not but would you know what the cost would be to fit similar technology onto a single platform? And if you know it maintenance costs/frequency?

Thank you for your request received by us on 6 June 2022 asking for information about the Floor-to-Ceiling platform screens that were fitted along the Elizabeth Line.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. You asked: what the cost would be to fit similar technology onto a single platform? And if you know it maintenance costs/frequency?

The anticipated final costs for the platform edge doors contract with Knorr – Bremse Rail Systems (UK) Ltd is £84.7m. As there are 16 platforms, each approximately 250m long, dividing the contract cost by 16 x 250 gives an approximate cost of £21,200 per metre for the platform screen doors. This would include design, procurement, install, testing & commissioning, assurance, maintenance, Infrastructure Manager support and preliminaries of the platform screen door (PSD) system as a whole not just the physical elements of the doors.

The platform screen doors were fitted into the much more complicated full height (platform to ‘roof’) platform edge screen system incorporating platform ventilation, public address systems, customer information screens, digital advertising screens etc. The structural framework into which the doors were fitted and everything else associated with the platform edge screens were all included within the lump sum contract cost for each station so it is not possible to determine the per metre costs of this element.
