FOI request detail

All possible PAYG single fares with travelcards

Request ID: FOI-0669-1920
Date published: 12 June 2019

You asked

Could you please provide the following information: for every pair of origin and destination stations in the Oyster PAYG area, and for every possible zonal travelcard, the Oyster cost of travelling from the origin to destination if one has the given travelcard on the Oyster card. Further, this should be provided for every type of passenger (Adult, Apprentice, 18+ student, etc). If there are multiple possible routes, this the fares should be provided for every route. Peak and off-peak fares should both be included. To put it differently, the information being requested is what one could find from the Single Fare Finder at https://tfl.gov.uk/fares/find-fares/tube-and-rail-fares/single-fare-finder *IF* it also had a field to indicate what travelcard one has. As a simple example, from Russel Square to Wood Green for an Adult with a zone 1-2 travelcard would cost £1.70 peak and £1.50 off-peak, if I'm not mistaken.

Our Ref: FOI-0669-1920

Thank you for your e-mail received on 5 June 2019 asking for information about all possible PAYG single fares with travel cards.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act and our information access policy.

Unfortunately we do not hold the information you have requested.

The ticketing system calculates the extension fares that are charged to holders of Oyster-based Travelcards; that is to say, the fares are calculated by the reader on a gate or standalone validator as the customer’s journey progresses.

There is not a database of all of the possible zonal combinations and all of the extension fares that would be charged for all possible journeys as that would be a huge database that would be unsustainable. It would not be reasonable to devise a system of smartcard validation that relied upon such a data source.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
