FOI request detail

Income percentage from ads

Request ID: FOI-0657-1819
Date published: 27 June 2018

You asked

I'm wondering how much of TfL's income each year comes from ads, e.g. on the tube? In Stockholm there are 3 times as many ads, but they make just 2-3% of their income from ads, so I was wondering how TfL compares. Looking forward to riding the London tube again next week. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for your request received on 12 June 2018 asking for information about revenue received from advertising.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we do holdhe information you require.

We run more than 16,000 advertising campaigns on our network, generating approximately £140m per year. Our overall income and funding is approximately £10.2billion. Advertising is therefore approximately 1% of our overall funding.

Our income and funding comes from a variety of sources including fares, the Congestion Charge, government grant and borrowing. Fares is the largest single source of income.
In 2017/18, 11 per cent of our funding came from ‘other sources’, this includes income from advertising, property rental, property sales and development, and third-party sponsorship for Cycle Hire and the Emirates Air Line. More information can be found on our website:
