FOI request detail

Daily station entry and exit figures 1/6 - 30/9/ for yrs 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022

Request ID: FOI-0590-2324
Date published: 20 June 2023

You asked

I am writing to you under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 to request information about the usage of the TfL transport network for use in an academic project. I would like to request the most recent daily entry and exit figures between 1 June and 30 September for each of the following years: 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022, for all stations on the TfL network (including the Underground, Overground and DLR). I would like to request that the actual observed data is included, presented in csv files, rather than data annualised daily data available here: http://crowding.data.tfl.gov.uk/ I understand that a recent FOI request, asking for a more extensive range of data across rail and boat networks, has been provided here: https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/transparency/freedom-of-information/foi-request-detail?referenceId=FOI-1760-2021. I therefore believe that this request is within scope and does not fall foil of any FOIA exemptions.

Thank you for your request received by us on 25 May 2023 asking for information about passenger data.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require. You asked: I would like to request the most recent daily entry and exit figures between 1 June and 30 September for each of the following years: 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022, for all stations on the TfL network (including the Underground, Overground and DLR). Please find attached the data as requested. For the period 2018, 2019 and 2022.

Please note that we do not have data prior to 2018 so we aren't able to provide the 2017 data requested. We now infer entries and exits based on journeys made when we only receive a validator tap which particularly affects non gated stations such as the DLR.

Please note that in accordance with TfL’s obligations under Data Protection legislation we have removed daily counts under 5, as required by section 40(2) of the FOI Act. This is because disclosure of this personal data would be a breach of the legislation, specifically the first principle which requires all processing of personal data to be fair and lawful. It would not be fair to disclose this personal information when the individuals have no expectation it would be disclosed and TfL has not satisfied one of the conditions which would make the processing ‘fair’.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
