Good morning,
I would like to know how many and the value of any legal payments made to claimants relating to slips and skids on highways and access/ manhole covers in the TFL remit.
I would be grateful if this information could cover a 5 year period.
Clarification received 02/06/2023: Request relates to vehicles and pedestrians; to the date the incident occurred, and; values are for total annual values
We answered
TfL Ref: FOI-0568-2324 Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 24th May 2023 asking for information about legal payments made to claimants relating to slips and skids on highways. Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. Specifically you asked: “I would like to know how many and the value of any legal payments made to claimants relating to slips and skids on highways and access/ manhole covers in the TFL remit. I would be grateful if this information could cover a 5 year period.” On 2nd June 2023 you clarified that the request relates to both vehicles and pedestrians; that you were after an annual value of pay-outs (totals) based on each year; and that the timeframe specified relates to the date of the incident. I can confirm that we hold the information you require, which is provided in the table below. Please note that our records for such claims are coded with a keyword of “Slip / Trip / Fall – Highway”, and to extract those cases that are just “slips” or “skids” and that involve a manhole or access cover had to be done by a search of a free-text field. It is possible, therefore, that there are some cases that have been missed depending on the exact phrasing used in that free text field. With that caveat in mind, the relevant cases that we have been able to identify are as follows. Please note further that these are closed claims only as it will be those that will have the full amount paid on them:
