Our Ref:          FOI-0510-1819

Thank you for your request received on 27 May 2018 asking for information about fires and collisions involving the articulated (Bendy) buses that were in operation in London between October 2001 and December 2011.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm we do hold the information you require.

Articulated buses were deployed on the busiest route corridors through London and encountered high volumes of other road users. Routes with the higher incident totals tended to pass through the busiest areas, operated longer mileage in the capital, at high scheduled frequency and required a bigger allocation of vehicles. TfL encourages the recording of all incidents on the bus network regardless of whether a third party was responsible or an injury was suffered or not, resulting in most reported incidents being of a minor nature.

Please find the requested information attached. For clarity, we have interpreted your request for ‘accidents’ to refer to injuries, therefore the records provided reflect injuries recorded on these services. Two tables have been provided. The first table lists all articulated bus fires and the second table lists all injuries on articulated buses. Where bus registrations have not been captured as part of the incident data capture process "Not Recorded" has been inserted.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for some reason, please feel free to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely
