TfL Ref: FOI-0506-1718

Thank you for your email received on 25 May requesting information about abandoned cycles.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our Information Access Policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require. You asked:

We do not hold comprehensive information on the number of abandoned cycles reported on the TfL Road Network (TLRN). The vast majority of complaints come in from either cyclists who are unhappy about cycle stands clogged with bikes that are not being used, or from nearby residents who complain about the area being untidy.

Regarding the process for abandoned bicycles – our contractors attach a notice to any suspected abandoned bike, notifying of our intention to remove it. If it is still there for a period of greater than 7 days, we then approve our contractors to break any locks and remove it from street. Once removed, cycles are stored in our contractors’ depots for a period of 28 days, then disposed of.

If this is not the information you are looking for, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal.

Yours sincerely,
