We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-0486-1920

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 17th May 2019 asking for information about traffic signals.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require.

Your questions are answered in turn below:

Quantity of traffic signal junctions you maintain:

2,709.

Quantity of traffic signal junctions that are LED:

1,391.

Quantity of junctions operating under intelligent control and what that is:

2,465 - operating under UTC (Urban Traffic Control), a central computerised control system which allows TfL to coordinate and adapt traffic signal timings in dense urban areas in real time.

Quantity of traffic signal pedestrian crossings you maintain:

2,681.

Quantity of traffic signal pedestrian crossings that are LED:

1,213.

Quantity of traffic signal pedestrian crossings operating under intelligent control and what that is:

1,687 - operating under UTC as defined above. This includes the following:

  • Pelican (Pedestrian Light Controlled Crossing) – This is a standalone crossing where red and green man aspects are on far side and include flashing amber/flashing green man.

  • Puffin (Pedestrian User Friendly Intelligent Crossing) - At Puffin crossings the red and green man aspects are housed on the poles as part of the push button unit. Puffin Crossings are designed to be user friendly.

  • Toucan – meaning “two-can” both pedestrians and cyclists can cross together.

  • Pedestrian Countdown – otherwise know as PCATS display how long is left on the pedestrian blackout period. This shows the pedestrian exactly how long is left to safely cross the road before the pedestrian red man appears.

Your detailed criteria that determines your refurbishment programme (which traffic signal sites to refurbish):

Sites are chosen on the basis of highest risk to the network. This network risk is built up from safety, functionality and financial risk. Work is currently ongoing to add environmental risk into the calculation.

Your refurbishment budget for 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024:
