We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-0446-2122

Thank you for your request of 31st May 2021 - clarified on 13th June 2021 -  asking for information about grades and salaries in London Underground.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Your questions are answered in turn below:
Question 1.The number of pay bands in TFL?
Answer: Pay bands 1-5 plus Director.
Question 2. The titles of staff in the LUL Operating grades that are allocated a particular grade?
Answer: Please see the attached spreadsheet.
Question 3. The training courses and length of courses for staff employed in the various station customer care grades from CSA 2 to Area Manager (trains), Revenue control grades, train crew grades, Service Control grades, any other miscellaneous grades?
Answer: For CSA 2 to Area Manager (trains) staff must complete the “Operational Manager” course which lasts 3 weeks. If they need to qualify as a train operator then this could be increased by 12 weeks depending on the line. For Revenue Control grades, this has not been recruited to for 13 years - however, the course was 6 weeks in length. Train crew grades require 3 weeks of initial training and then 9-12 weeks of on line training depending on the line that they ae going to. Service Control grades require 6 weeks of initial training and then possibly 9 months of line training depending on the complexity of the line and other issues.
Question 4. The minimum and maximum annual leave entitlements (inclusive of public holidays) of all grades mentioned in 3 above.
Answer: All LU Operational staff get 29 days annual leave plus 8 bank holidays, but they are rostered to work on those days and so receive them as additional Annual Leave which is then allocated in blocks. That brings them up to 37 days.

In addition Train Operators are paid for working 35 hours a week but work 36 hours a week and get the rest back in what are called ‘Banked Rest Days’ a total of 6 which is added to their block leave bringing it up to 43.

Most Stations Staff are paid for 35 hours but work 37.5 hours a week and so get 15 Banked Rest Days a year bringing them up to 52.
Question 5. Are performance managers and Line General Managers in any of the above pay bands are above such bands and if so their current salaries for the grades?
Answer: The Line General Manager and Performance Manager now fall into Band4, Band5 and Director grades. We have checked all the individuals in the above roles, and all Band4s and Band5s are within their pay band range for the grade (below the max of the pay band). Directors are exempt from pay bands.
Question 6. At one time in the distant past it was possible to rise from trhe lowest grade to the very highest grade without any University degree, isa that the same today or is it that thge top tiers of management come from University graduates who train for and enter a senior managemnenbt position upon successful completion of the training scheme?
Answer: TfL does not keep details of a person’s educational attainment. However, it is possible for staff to be promoted to the highest grades without a degree.
Question 7. Were in the hierarchy do operations officers, senior operations officers and chierf operating officers fall in the hierarchy and salary banding?
Answer: We do not recognise exactly which roles you are referring to. However, note that a list of staff earning over £50k can be found on the TfL website here:
