Dear Transport for London, There is a a sign on the Eastbound side of London Red Route A316 at TQ 1674 saying 1395m. Please could you tell me: What is it for? What is it 1395m from or 1395m to? Why is it in metres and not miles or yards? Many thanks for your assistance in this request.

We answered

TfL Ref: 0281-1920

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 18 April 2019 asking for information about a sign on the A316 in the London Borough of Richmond.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold some of the information you require.  You asked: There is a a sign on the Eastbound side of  London Red Route A316 at TQ 1674 saying 1395m. Please could you tell me:

What is it for?

What is it 1395m from or 1395m to?

Why is it in metres and not miles or yards?

TfL introduced a banned U turn restriction in 2016 in response to a number of collisions involving U turning vehicles along that route. In this specific instance, the signage was designed to indicate the length of the U turn ban distance for which the ban is operational.

It is standard practice for our road signs to be reflected in miles and yards and the quotation of any distances on signage in metres is therefore incorrect.  We have tasked one of our subcontractors to resolve this. This work is being prioritised and has been targeted for completion during Autumn 2019.

If this is not the information you are looking for, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
