I am in the process of writing my postgraduate dissertation through Edinburgh Napier University which compares data between the London bus market and England outside of London for the purposes of assessing any differences between these markets in terms of deregulated vs regulated. I am writing to find out if you may be able to provide me with data for London bus operators contracted in the financial year 2015-16. The areas I am interested in are; company accounts, fleet sizes and staff numbers. In addition to this I also require customer satisfaction data for London Buses by operator for the calendar year 2015.

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 30 April 2018 asking for information about bus operators in London.

Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and our information access policy. I can confirm that we do hold some of the information you require.

The most recent fleet details held, which can be searched by operator is available on our website at https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/bus-fleet-data-and-audits.

We do not hold operator accounts or their staff numbers. However, there are around 25,000 bus drivers in the fleet and 9,000 vehicles so an approximation would be almost three drivers to one bus.

Please find attached the Q3 14/15 Bus Services Customer Satisfaction Survey report. We have since discontinued the Operator level results because the sample sizes have been reduced and so the data is no longer robust at that level (and the operators vary in size/number of routes they run) – Customer Satisfaction levels by operators is therefore not held.
