FOI request detail

Cycle Traffic Data

Request ID: FOI-0253-1718
Date published: 05 June 2017

You asked

Can you therefore please provide: 1) An up-to-date listing of all current and historical automatic cycle counters along with name and location (easting/northing is fine). 2) Presuming data is still stored in the same manner as for the earlier FOI request, data for each counter up to the latest period available by day, split into hourly (or close to hourly) buckets for each compiled year, presumably by now that would be up to the end of 2016. Priority should be given to more recent years if there is an issue of cost or time in providing the data. If you have modernised your data and can also provide data at reasonable cost from 2017 up to a recent date as well, especially for those counters on recent superhighways it would be very welcome.

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 7 May 2017 asking for information about cycle counters and data.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold  the information you require.

You asked for:

1) An up-to-date listing of all current and historical automatic cycle counters along with name and location (easting/northing is fine).

Over the last few years the way in which we monitor and represent cycling levels across London has evolved to meet the requirement of the Mayors Vision for Cycling.

We can provide cycling data from TfL’s new cycle monitoring programme in the form of summary reports and tabular excel cycle count data. This represents the most structured and up-to–date set of data we can provide on cycling in London.

Please find attached:

- A short presentation explaining how cycling monitoring expanded over the past couple of years.

- A pdf report summarising the latest quarterly cycle count results Q3 2016-17.

- An excel file (zip) with the results from cycle count including detailed data per site, direction and 15 minute time periods since Q4 2013.

Please note that in accordance with TfL’s obligations under the Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA) some personal data has been withheld, as required by section 40(2) of the FOI Act. This is because disclosure of this personal data would be a breach of the DPA, specifically the first principle of the DPA which requires all processing of personal data to be fair and lawful. It would not be fair to disclose this personal information when the individuals have no expectation it would be disclosed and TfL has not satisfied one of the conditions of Schedule 2 of the Data Protection Act which would make the processing ‘fair’.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
