Tfl salary and working hours enquires

Request ID: FOI-0225-2324
Date published: 15 May 2023

You asked

Hi tfl I would like to please know what is the salary of a night tube CSA that works 15 hours, 22.5 and 36 hours. Also do they get to pick stations or are they assigned to them when they start? In terms of working hours, if you have lets say a contracted hours of 15/20, would you be able to possibly increase or decrease it along the line? I would also want to know what is the possibility of progressing from a CSA and moving up the ranks if along the line, you were to gain a qualification.

We answered

TfL Ref: FOI-0225-2324

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 20th April 2023 asking for information about the Customer Services Assistant role on the London Underground.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.

Specifically you asked:

I can confirm that we hold the information you require. Your questions are answered in turn below:

Question 1: What is the salary of a night tube CSA that works 15 hours, 22.5 and 36 hours.

Answer: The Customer Service Assistant Night Tube role is a 2 day, 15-hour position only. The annual salary is £16,692.  Additional hours might occasionally be available on a weekly basis if there is a business need but we do not have 22.5 and 36 hour positions.

Question 2: Do they get to pick stations or are they assigned to them when they start?

Answer: New CSAs are assigned a location based on business needs.

Question 3: In terms of working hours, if you have lets say a contracted hours of 15/20, would you be able to possibly increase or decrease it along the line?

Answer: See the answer to Question 1 above about hours worked. Staff cannot change hours or position in the first 12 months. However, staff are able to nominate another position (including nominating a CSA positions with 20 or 35 hours) after 6 months and be placed on a waiting list for those roles. There is no way to estimate when a move to another position would become available.

Question 4: I would also want to know what is the possibility of progressing from a CSA and moving up the ranks if along the line, you were to gain a qualification?

Answer: There are lots of opportunities to apply for other roles in the business through promotions or sideways moves. The Internal Vacancies page on the TfL intranet (Platform) lists those opportunities and details the different requirements for each role. Promotion from CSA Night tube would normally be to Customer Service Supervisor or Customer Service Manager, but there are lots of other options available to staff through the Vacancies page.
