TfL Ref: FOI-0177-2324
Thank you for your request received by us on 17 April asking for information about structural loading tests for the installation of ULEZ cameras. Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can confirm that we hold the information you require.
As part of the project to extend the ULEZ out to the north and south circular roads, cameras were installed on predominantly existing traffic signal posts and new posts. A small number of existing lamp columns were also utilised. A risk assessment determined that the risk associated with attaching the cameras to existing traffic signal posts was low. No structural testing was required for these installations as they were within the loading allowances of the original design and the risk assessment made allowance for the existing condition of the traffic signal posts. New posts were designed to current standards with technical approval in accordance with TfL standard SQA-2025 (now superseded by PR1477). Calculations for the use of existing lamp columns was undertaken for the new proposed loading. The calculations used the results from structural tests to determine the thickness of the steel in the columns.
The same process is being followed for the current live project to extend ULEZ out to the M25. Note that there is currently no proposals to install cameras on any lamp columns, so no structural testing has been required.
