Number of "Mind the Gap" announcements per day

You asked

Hi, I recently used the Tube from while visiting in London for the first time. I found it to be a very helpful means of transportation and very well run (though I do wish there were less steps going up/down). I have a question. I am wondering if you are able to estimate how many times a day (per daily service hours) the announcement "Mind the gap" is used. I am thinking, given the number of stops of each train, and the number of trains running each day, and that it is therefore announced for each of those stops multiple times per day, that it must be the mostly commonly used phrase in all of London (if not in the entire nation of England). Thanks so much for making my time in London 2017 such an enjoyable visit.

TfL Ref: 0130-1718

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 18 April 2017 asking for information about the estimated number of times the announcement "Mind the gap" is used.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.  I can confirm that we hold the information you require.

‘Mind the gap’ is a commonly used phrase on the London Underground. As the phrase is used across various different forms of announcements it is impossible to provide a precise answer to the question.

However, based upon the available data that we have, we can estimate that the phrase is used at least 200,000 times per day. This is calculated from the number of times it is used in pre-recorded train and platform announcements and the number of trains running throughout the day. The figure also takes into account an estimate for the number of times ‘mind the gap’ is used by TfL staff during platform announcements.
