FOI request detail

Ulez and councils

Request ID: FOI-0088-2324
Date published: 10 May 2023

You asked

With the Freedom of Information Act, can I ask TFL, how many councils (and if possible which ones) have asked and been granted exemption from the ULEZ charge. This question is not only based on the possible forthcoming ULEZ expansion, but the councils that already are in the current ULEZ zone (North and South circular).

We answered

Following the announcement of the inner London extension of the ULEZ, which took effect from 25 October 2021, we were contacted by three London boroughs, Redbridge, Newham and Greenwich, who outlined that they had ordered new compliant vehicles but that they would not be delivered in time for the launch of the extended zone. In recognition of the essential service provided by the boroughs, and the relevant vehicles, a five month vehicle specific exemption was granted.

In the recent consultation in Summer 2022, two London Boroughs as part of their responses, enquired about exemptions. These were the London Borough of Hounslow and Greenwich. They were acknowledged in the report but no further specific requests have been made.

No other representations for vehicle specific exemptions from London Boroughs have been received or granted by TfL.
