The Elizabeth line route (currently called Crossrail),  will run over 120km from Reading and Heathrow in the west, through new tunnels under central London, to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east and is due to open in December 2018. We are now looking for people to help us run our new railway.

We're recruiting for people to help control and maintain the track, signals and the other assets which make up the infrastructure from our new control centre in Romford. We want people from all walks of life who have the desire to take on this responsibility whilst demonstrating a positive attitude.

Infrastructure operations roles

Service and infrastructure manager

Contract type - permanent

Service and infrastructure managers lead and manage the realtime delivery of train services. This involves managing collaborative, multi-stakeholder relationships and communicating decisive action during times of disruption to restore normal train services.

For this role, you are required to follow and oversee rules and working procedures while also making sure that your team of traffic managers and incident response managers deliver safe, reliable and efficient network services. This role involves managerial accountability.

Traffic manager

Contract type - permanent

Reporting to the service and infrastructure manager, a traffic manager's role involves regulating and managing the provision of services. You will be responsible for signalling operation, electrical control systems, tunnel ventilation, as well as understanding and applying relevant standards, rules and procedures in order to minimise the impact of service disruption. You must also meet the statutory, business and route performance requirements.

During normal operations, traffic managers are expected to monitor the systems and train services and, where necessary, minimise the impact of service disruption to meet service performance requirements. Traffic managers are also responsible for some administrative duties, like investigating and recording delays to trains. This data is then accurately input within the performance monitoring and delay attribution systems.

Incident response manager

Reporting to the service and infrastructure manager, incident response managers are required to lead and manage on-site responses to events. These events could include anything from infrastructure equipment failure and a fatality on the railway to a person being taken ill or a security event or threat.

Such events may require collaborative work with incident responders from other departments or organisations, including the emergency services. Reacting to these events minimises disruption and allows normal working to resume more quickly as soon as it's safe.

Advert phases

There will be two advert phases, but please note that we may close them earlier than the scheduled if we receive a high number of applications.

Phase 1 - Service Infrastructure roles
These will be advertised between October and November 2016.

Phase 2 - Traffic Manager and Incidence Response Manager roles
These will be advertised between January and February 2017.

The recruitment process

There are various stages to this process. These include:

Stage one - Online application
You must complete your application online. If successful, you will be invited to stage two.

Stage two - Situational Judgment Test (SJT)
This is an online-based test

You will sit an online Situational Judgement Test. If successful, you will be invited to stage three.

Stage three - Occupational Psychometric Test (OPC)
This is an online-based test

You will sit an online Occupational Psychometric Test (OPC). If successful, you will be invited to stage four.

Stage four - Assessment centre

You will be invited to the assessment centre at West Kensington - Ashfield House. This stage includes:

  • A multi-storyboard assessment/exercise
  • A face-to-face competency based interview

Only successful applicants will receive further information about the next stage.

Please bear in mind that you will not be reimbursed for travel expenses to attend the assessment centre.

Getting an offer

To be successfully employed by us, you must have received an offer from us and passed the following:

  • A basic disclosure check
  • Employment referencing
  • A medical screening and drug and alcohol test
  • Training: If you fail this training your employment offer may be terminated

Shift patterns

You will be required to work on any day of the year on a variety of shift patterns, including nights and weekends. These roles are spread across a variety of shift patterns and we are unable to offer a fixed shift pattern.

Training

If you're successful, you'll be offered a comprehensive training programme to give you the knowledge and skills to undertake all aspects of the role.
