Upgrading and renewing the track on the world's oldest underground network is an essential part of transforming the tube into the world class network the world's greatest city deserves, and you can be a part of it. Our Capital Programmes Directorate has an apprenticeship opportunity for individuals with the right attitude and aptitude to train to become our engineers and leaders of tomorrow.
The Intermediate (Level 2) and Advanced (Level 3) Apprenticeship programmes will provide you with on and off the job training working with professional and experienced engineers, project managers, commercial teams and our fully accredited and experienced external training provider. Initially gaining the essential safety and practical training competencies and licences you will need throughout your career, you will follow a structured placement programme to gain first hand experience of our deep tube and open section track and drainage renewal activities together with an introduction to engineering principles, specifications, standards and contractual and commercial agreements. During the first 18 months you will work to gain your NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Rail Engineering and Underpinning Knowledge. On completion of the Intermediate Apprenticeship you will have the opportunity to progress to the Advanced (Level 3) Apprenticeship leading to the award of an NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Rail Engineering as well as academic studies leading to a Diploma in Engineering. During the Advanced Apprenticeship you will follow a further structured placement programme designed to provide you with additional skills in project management, project / construction engineering, surveying etc. which builds upon the skills and knowledge acquired in the first 18 months.
Both schemes incorporate spending time with our training provider where you will complete your Technical Certificate and academic studies.

Maintaining the track on the oldest tube network in the world is full of nightly challenges for our Track Maintenance organisations. Our maintenance teams work out of sight of the travelling public once trains have stopped running at night, within a very short window of engineering time to complete essential track maintenance operations and critical safety inspections, before the passenger trains run once again in the morning.
Our Level 2 Track Apprentice programme gives you a mixture of essential track skills training at our dedicated track training facilities along with on-the-job coaching and mentoring with experienced track maintenance/inspections teams working on the track across the network. The programme also incorporates spending time at college, where you will complete your Technical Certificate.
By the end of the scheme, you will be competent to undertake track maintenance activities using a wide range of track plant, tools and equipment, along with holding a Safety Critical Licence that will enable you to carry out Safety Critical Track inspections of the track.
