Three-year apprenticeships

We offer a number of three-year schemes across LU Engineering:

Train Maintenance

The Fleet group carry out all the maintenance and reliability improvements on all the trains on London Underground and is responsible for providing safe, reliable and clean trains for the travelling public.

The Maintenance Teams test and check the trains before service and carry out electrical and mechanical maintenance, fault rectification and modifications. We also carry out the movements of trains within the depots.

With the industry developments in on-board electronics and IT equipment fitted to our new fleet of trains and the modifications required to fit them to our existing trains, it is important our staff are fully trained with these new skills within our Fleet Maintenance Department to meet these demanding targets.

Escalator Technician

Thinking of becoming an Escalator engineer? Then look no further than a career within TfL Escalator Division.

We have many roles to offer from Heavy Repair Fitters who re-build Escalators, Call-Out Fitters who man our 24-7 response teams along with Maintenance Engineers who maintain our escalators.

Let's not forget our CAD Engineers in our Design Section or Project Engineers who deal with all the support to allow all of this happen.

With all we offer above available, what's keeping you? We are looking forward to seeing you at the TfL Escalator Division.

Civil Engineering

The Civil Engineering team are responsible for maintaining over 3,300 bridges and major structures, nearly 5,000 other structures, 290 km track drainage 146 km, and 160 km cuttings and embankments. This provides a variety of challenges, looking after and maintains assets over 150 years old. Bringing in innovation in design and new methods and replacing the old material for new upgraded materials.

The Civil Engineering programme will provide you with the opportunity to work alongside experienced staff to gain experience. You will also have a programme of development to gain qualifications required to carry out essential works in the Civil Engineering environment.

This Apprenticeship will lead to a strong academic route into Civil Engineering institutions. It will also provide you with a wealth of experience working in a friendly and camaraderie atmosphere.

Depot Maintenance Unit (DMU)

The Depot Maintenance Unit (DMU) forms a part of Operational Facilities within the Asset and Operational Support Directorate.

  • The DMU is responsible for the preventative and corrective maintenance of depot plant and equipment within train maintenance depots
  • The safety and performance of external maintenance contractors
  • delivering short/medium-term and whole life asset planning
  • The provision of new plant and equipment which meet all of the user requirements and safety legislation
  • Ensuring that all statutory requirements are complied with, with regards to depot, plant and equipment.

The Depot Maintenance Unit is divided into a core Asset Management and Engineering team and three production teams based across the TfL network.
These teams carry out programmed preventative maintenance and site surveillance work, and, as required, oversee external contractors.

If you are interested in a varied and rewarding career in engineering and have what it takes to work within a team, then come along and join us at DMU.

Power & Electrical

Power and Electrical (P&E) are primarily responsible for the maintenance and fault rectification of 630Vdc Electrical Track Equipment (ETE), basically equipment that gets power to the trains. In addition to this, P&E maintain the LU station to station 400Vac lighting main, tunnel lighting and tunnel transformers.
As a member of the P&E Team, you will be engaging in the following activities:

  • Power and Electrical design capability and project delivery
  • Installation, maintenance and repair of ETE assets across London Underground
  • Electrical installations to NIC/EIC standards
  • The installation of bespoke temporary power supplies
  • Emergency electrical response
  • Supporting various Track and Signal works

Serving an apprenticeship at P&E could lead to Electrician Accreditation and/or IRSE Licencing as an electrical track technician.

If you are interested in a varied and rewarding career in engineering and have what it takes to work within a team, then come along and join us at Power & Electrical, and help us keep London moving with our world class metro system.

Signal Design

We are looking for candidates to help us retain in-house knowledge of our signalling systems into the future. As we upgrade our legacy systems to modern automatically driven systems, the principles underpinning signalling are largely unchanged from the traditional technology.

An apprenticeship in Signal Design provides an ideal springboard from which to develop into a fully rounded signalling engineer. Upon successful completion of your apprenticeship, you would take up a position in our Signal Design team in order to enhance your skills further. Opportunities would then exist to develop into one of our resident experts, responsible for specifying, accepting or approving design modifications.

In-house design generally covers small to medium size projects such as point and crossing renewal, local performance improvements, station refurbishments etc. Larger projects such as Line Upgrades are typically undertaken by external contractors, with our in-house team being responsible for specifying and accepting designs. On such projects there are likely to be opportunities to develop knowledge of the new technology, e.g. By secondment to the contractor's team, both during and after your apprenticeship."

Workshop Technician (Railway Engineering Workshop)

Trains Division's unique workshops are based in Acton West London, where we undertake the overhaul and repair of Rolling Stock and its associated control equipment along with Signalling control equipment.

Trains Division scope of supply is huge, ranging from train refurbishment down to individual printed circuit board level. Our core work includes traction motor overhaul; wheelset/gearbox overhaul; train collision repair/refurbishment; signalling control equipment overhaul and electronic equipment repair/overhaul, much of which is Safety Critical.

Due to this variety of work that we undertake, it allows apprentices to develop their careers in an engineering discipline that they feel most comfortable with, ranging from heavy engineering to electronic repair and test.

If you are interested in a varied and rewarding career in engineering and have what it takes to work within a team, then come along and join us at Trains Division, and help us to keep Londoners moving on a clean, safe modern metro.

What we need

We are looking for highly motivated people with a keen interest and aptitude in engineering. You will be someone who really likes to get involved and has a real passion and practical interest in engineering.

What you get out of it
