Information Management Apprenticeship

Scheme overview

As a function, Information Management is responsible for a number of areas, including:

  • Long-term IM strategy
  • Delivery of short and long-term IM projects (eg service design, build, testing, deployment and upgrades)
  • Management of the daily service delivered to business users, which includes:
    • Desktop hardware and services, file storage and printing
    • Core business services (Exchange, SAP and SharePoint)
    • Business-specific services (Remedy and TrackerNet)
    • Supporting our IT network and infrastructure
    • Telephone services and mobile devices (including tablets and handsets)

Scheme length
Two years

Entry requirements
Five A*-C grade GCSEs or certified equivalent, including maths and English language (essential), Science and ICT (desirable). You must be 18 years of age by 1 September 2016.

Salaries will differ according to the scheme, however, all our schemes offer a competitive package with the minimum London living wage.

This apprenticeship may also be a route to:
A senior specialist/analyst.

Joining us

Initially, there is a three-day induction based in London which explains everything there is to know about us, the role and where you fit in. Following that, you'll begin an intensive development programme, designed to give your career a real kickstart.

The programme involves on-the-job training, working with experienced staff to help you develop the skills needed for the IM profession, as well as classroom-based training. You'll also learn all the essential skills to enable you to work on and improve the variety of systems and technology.

This scheme operates in two separate areas of IM: Service Management and Infrastructure Services, both of which use different skills and strengths. Please consider tailoring your application for the area you want to join.

Service Management

This placement provides exposure to all areas of the Service Management department to experience all aspects of how IM supports over 500 business services. You will also interact with projects which transition new and amended services. 

During the programme you'll work alongside established professionals across a range of areas, including:

  • Service Operations - request for new or existing services
  • Service Delivery (Applications) - supporting core business IT services
  • Service Transition (Change) - managing changes to the IT infrastructure
  • Service Transition (Release) - the testing and release of services prior to business use
  • Service Management - managing the performance of IT services and suppliers

Infrastructure Services

Here, you will be involved in maintaining a large number of servers and desktops across the IT estate, including a wide range of operating systems such as: Windows, UNIX and Citrix. Working with experienced professionals, challenges can range from remote monitoring, estate changes, to overall improvements for both our internal and external customers' user experience. During the programme you'll work in a range of areas including:
  • IS Operations Analytics: completing service requests for users and solving desktop/application related incidents across our organisation
  • IS Ops: Citrix - provisioning applications and maintaining the Windows XP and 7 farms
  • IS Ops: Messaging - maintaining and improving the exchange servers used to communicate
  • IS Ops: Wintel - maintaining servers across our organisation and the services running on each machine
  • IS Ops: ETA (Enterprise Tools & Automation) - monitor our estate to improve infrastructure

Performance and Compliance

IM Performance and Compliance is responsible for delivering services that enable the business to achieve its objectives. You'll be involved in the following deliverables:

  • Improving the efficiencies of programme and project delivery
  • Providing assurance that projects seeking authority are fit to proceed
  • Encouraging improvement by sharing knowledge and best practices
  • Providing an integrated end-to-end resource management service
  • Providing workforce capability development
  • Forecasting, monitoring and reporting costs (Capital and Revenue projects)

On either route you will learn and gain hands-on experience from subject matter experts across a wide range of industry disciplines, supporting the IM needs our whole London estate, which consists of more than 30,000 users.

What you get out of it

You'll develop your skills by working through a set of challenging placements and will also benefit from on-the-job coaching.

After two years, you will gain a City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in ICT Professional Competence and ICT Systems and Principles.


  • Level 3 Diploma in ICT Professional Competence (coursework)
  • Level 3 Diploma in ICT Systems and Principles (technical exams)

As well as these, you'll get the chance to gain industry-recognised training qualifications, which include:

  • ITIL Foundation Certificate in IT Service Management
  • ITIL Intermediate Lifecycle Certificates (Infrastructure Services)
  • Introduction Certificate: APM Project Fundamentals Qualification (Service Management)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008/2012 (Infrastructure Services)
  • BSC Certificate in Business Analysis Practice (Service Management)

At the end of your apprenticeship, if successful you'll be able to apply for a permanent position within the IM department.
