Scheme overview

The Higher Apprenticeship in Project Management will provide a comprehensive structured training programme over two years and an introduction to a variety of project areas and the skills required of a good project manager.

Scheme length
Two years

Entry requirements
Five GCSEs grade *A-C or certified equivalent, in maths, English language, science or ICT and any two other subjects. You must be 18 by 1 September 2016.

Salaries will differ according to the scheme, however, all our schemes offer a competitive package with the minimum London living wage.

This apprenticeship may be a route to:
A project co-ordinator role, assistant project manager, project manager and senior project manager

Joining us

Initially, there is a three-day induction based in London, which explains everything there is to know about us, the role and where the apprentice fits in. Following that, apprentices begin an intensive development programme which is designed to give your career a real kickstart.

You'll gain a broad knowledge of different types of projects, an insight into many different areas of our business and an understanding of what it takes to provide a internationally respected transport system in London

The programme looks to attract high calibre people as a source of future leaders in project management, developed through project management professionals. They will provide the grounding in capital programme delivery and the ability to engage, communicate and collaborate with all stakeholders.

As an apprentice, you'll learn the following project management competencies to IPMA level D:

  • Stakeholder management
  • Planning
  • Risk/opportunity and issue management
  • Health and safety management
  • Budgeting and cost management
  • Information management and reporting
  • Handover and close out
  • Contract management
  • Communication
  • Teamwork
  • Customer focus
  • Business case, project structure and progress monitoring
  • Managing project scope
  • Managing project schedule, quality and resources

You will complete these via a combination of practical training, working with experienced project managers across the business, and classroom-based training. This experience will give you an insight into the role of a project manger from all angles.


The placement is split into four placements lasting six months in Surface, CPD and London Overground and is made up of:

  • Apprentices who have the ability to work well in teams and strong inter-personal skills

What you get out of it

During your apprenticeship, you'll gain:

  • Hands-on training at various locations across our network
  • Project management skills, such as planning, health and safety management, cost management
  • An ability to engage, communicate and collaborate with members of your project team, customers and stakeholders


You will get several weeks of classroom training with our training provider who is accredited by the APM.


When you complete this scheme you will gain a:

  • Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship in Project Management
  • Level 4 Diploma in Project Management through completion of a portfolio of work and two exams

We want our staff to pass on their skills and expertise to the next generation of project staff. At the end of the scheme, successful apprentices will move in to a project co-ordinator position, with further career progression opportunities such as assistant project manager, project manager and senior project manager.
