In recent years, London's population has boomed to 8.6 million and is expected to reach 10 million in the next 15 years.

This means an extra five million journeys a day on our network by 2031. That's the equivalent of having one full Tube train arriving every three days for the next 15 years.

What we're doing

We are continuing to invest in programmes to create more room in stations and on trains and to provide more frequent services. We are also providing better information about the busiest times and places on the Tube.

Even with all our investment programmes it can get very busy at specific times at the most heavily used places on our network.

Some of this congestion happens for short periods of time and in predictable places. Some customers have told us they would like to choose quieter routes, so we're providing better information about where and when our network is busy to help people make informed choices.

We know that not everyone can change the time or route they travel but for those that can be flexible, avoiding the busiest times and places could result in a quicker and more comfortable journey.

Our ongoing programme of station information improvements includes:

  • Graphs of busiest times on our station pages
  • Downloads of busiest times information in the Journey Planner
  • Maps showing walking times and steps between stations - see our walking section
  • Working with businesses to develop new and improved employee communications
  • Working with developers to find ways of using datasets to maximise capacity on the network and provide customers with travel options
  • Rolling out Virgin Media WiFi to more than 250 Tube stations to help customers keep up to date on the move
