Travelling to Gatwick Airport

Use your contactless payment or Oyster card to pay as you go all the way to the departures terminal at Gatwick. It's the easiest way to pay for your travel from London, but some National Rail tickets are cheaper - such as returns, season tickets and group tickets.

Different pay as you go fares apply depending on the service you use:

On Thameslink and Southern services

You will be charged a peak or off-peak fare, depending on when you travel.

You will be charged a discounted fare if you:

  • Use an 11-15 or 16+ Zip Oyster photocard
  • Have a Jobcentre Plus, National Railcard, Disabled Railcard, Gold Card or Young Visitor discount set on your Oyster card

Children with a 5-10 Zip Oyster photocard can travel free between London Terminals and Coulsdon South. If their journey includes travel to/from any station between Merstham and Gatwick Airport then pay as you go credit must be added to their 5-10 Zip Oyster photocard as they will be charged a child-rate pay as you go fare for the whole journey.

Journeys on these services count towards daily and weekly caps.

Freedom Passes, 60+ London and Veterans Oyster photocards are not valid between Coulsdon South and Gatwick Airport.

On Gatwick Express services

Premium fares are charged at all times- there is no difference between peak and off-peak travel.

You will be charged a discounted fare if you have:

  • A 5-10, 11-15 or 16+ Zip Oyster photocard (children with a 5-10 Zip Oyster photocard do not travel free)
  • A Jobcentre Plus, National Railcard, Disabled Railcard, Gold Card or Young Visitor discount set on your Oyster card

Journeys on these services do not count towards capping.

Freedom Passes, 60+ London and Veterans Oyster photocards are not valid for travel on Gatwick Express services.

Use the single fare finder for pay as you go fares between Gatwick Airport and London (including journeys to and from Merstham, Earlswood, Redhill, Salfords and Horley).

Using pay as you go is the easiest way to pay for travel to and from Gatwick Airport, but some National Rail tickets will be cheaper - in particular returns, season tickets and group tickets.

Caps

Journeys on Gatwick Express do not count towards caps, but those on Thameslink and Southern services do.

Journeys on Gatwick Express are charged separately from travel on any other service. For example, if you start your journey on the Tube and change at Victoria onto the Gatwick Express, you will be charged two single fares.

Refunds at Gatwick Airport

If you no longer need your Oyster card, you can return it and get a refund for any unused pay as you go credit and the card deposit.

At Gatwick Airport you can only get a refund for any unused pay as you go credit and the Oyster card deposit up to a combined value of £30. To do this, go to the rail ticket desk in the Onward Travel area in the South Terminal. This is the only place at Gatwick Airport where you can get a refund if you return your Oyster card.

Alternatively, if you have a UK bank account, you can post your card to TfL or apply online for a refund.
