The TfL Oyster and contactless app will be the first official ticketing app for London. When we launch it in 2017, the app will allow you to:

  • Check your pay as you go balance
  • See your season tickets
  • Top up pay as you go credit and buy season tickets
  • Get in app notifications if your pay as you go balance falls below £10 or your season ticket is about to expire

When you use the app to top up or buy a season ticket, you'll be able to collect it 30 minutes later when you touch on a yellow card reader as part of a journey.

We'll introduce other features throughout 2017, including the ability to manage contactless payment cards you use for travel.

How to join the pilot

We are working with research agency 2CV to invite customers to take part in a pilot. Invitations will be emailed to customers who pay full adult rate fares and use Oyster to pay as you go or buy a 7 Day Travelcard and travel regularly on rail services.

If you've been invited to take part in the pilot you'll need:

  • An iOS or Android smartphone
  • An Oyster online account - you can set one up by visiting the Oyster page in Fares & payments
  • A standard blue Oyster card that you use to pay full adult rate fares

Your Oyster card must have a 'D' in the bottom left hand corner (indicated by the red square in this image).

Feedback on the app

We're running the pilot so you can help us improve the app before we release it to the general public.

You can provide feedback at any time by completing an online form.

If the app is not working as it is or you are having trouble using it, please call our Customer Services team on 0343 222 1115.

If you're taking part in the pilot, please note that in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the app, we will analyse the value, time and days you topped up or bought a Travelcard on your Oyster card before you started using the app compared to orders you placed using the app. This data will then be aggregated so we are unable to use this information to identify you.

During the pilot

Use the app every time you top up your pay as you go credit or buy a season ticket. During the pilot, you'll be able to benefit from the app features mentioned above, with one exception - when you use the app to top up pay as you go or buy a season ticket, you won't be able to collect it 30 minutes later as part of a bus journey.

If you are taking part in the pilot, please do not use the TfL website to top up pay as you go credit or buy season tickets. Oyster Online will only be available during the pilot to collect the following day and only at the specific station you nominate.
