The plan

Our plan for London's roads is a consolidation of a number of programmes and initiatives to make London's roads more reliable, safer and greener.

The plan includes:

  • 17 major road schemes to create better public spaces and support redevelopment and economic growth
  • 33 junction improvements to make London's busiest junctions safer and more attractive for vulnerable road users
  • Four new Cycle Superhighways as well as improvements to four existing routes to provide safer, faster and more direct journeys into the city
  • A continuing programme of modernising traffic signals and adding pedestrian countdowns to help people get around with greater ease
  • Maintenance and modernisation of essential roads, bridges and tunnels

The vision

We have a clear vision, supported by five key objectives:

  1. Ensuring our road assets are fit for the future
  2. Delivering a programme of major highway improvements
  3. Delivering improvements for cycling
  4. Halving fatalities and serious injuries on London's roads
  5. Keeping London moving and tackling congestion

How will this affect me?

Whilst we make improvements, there will be disruption on some roads.

We'll give as much notice as possible to minimize the impact to your journeys, so advise you to check before you travel by:

To help reduce disruption, our 24 hour Traffic Control Centre actively manages congestion in real-time, identifying traffic hotspots and managing traffic flows away from and around locations where construction is taking place.
