Starting a journey

Knowing how to buy a ticket, how to get information and how to get help are vital skills to ensure that children can access transport and remain safe whilst doing so. This module will provide you with activities to guide your class through the basics of independent travel.

Teacher's pack
Activities within this section will deliver the following National Curriculum Citizenship Objectives:
1a Children should be taught to talk and write about their opinions and explain their views, on issues that affect themselves and society
1c children should be taught to face new challenges positively by collecting information, looking for help, making responsible choices and taking action.
1e children should be taught to know about a range of jobs carried out by people they know and to understand how they can make their own contribution in the future.
3e children should be taught to recognise the different risks in different situations and then decide how to behave responsibly
4a children should be taught to know that their actions affect themselves and others, to care about other people's feelings and to try to see things from their point of view.

Starter questions
Use these questions to provoke childrens’ thinking during the introduction to a lesson. Write them on a board or use as quick fire questions at the start of the session.
Circle Time - activity starters
These teacher notes provide ideas and activities and information that teachers can use to structure circle time sessions. The accompanying photo cards and verbal activity cards provide stimuli to engage your group.
Classroom based activities

The TfL online Journey Planner is a great resource for planning any journey from the very basic to the most complex using many different modes of transport. This activity structures a session in which children learn how to use Journey Planner for themselves.

TfL produce a wide variety of maps to help people to plan journeys on all modes of transport.
